Thanksgiving Day Blessing

O God of all things in heaven and on earth, you give all your people in the world the gift of life,
the gift of family, the gift of work, and the gift of rest.

On this, our national day of Thanksgiving, we turn all our thoughts to you, from whom all blessings flow.

Bless all our work, our friends, and our families both near and far. We humbly ask for the ability to continue our work for your kingdom and the ability to gather freely to worship you without fear.

We ask you to give our years ahead your blessing and protection.

We ask all this through Christ the Lord, your Son and our brother. Amen.

 

Thanksgiving Day Mass

 

This Thursday, our nation will pause to celebrate Thanksgiving. As is our custom, we will offer an opportunity to come to mass and join fellow parishioners in gratitude to God for the blessings we so often take for granted. We will celebrate Thanksgiving Mass on Thursday, November 23rd at 9:00 in the morning in Church. Please make gratitude to God a priority, and make plans to join us.

 

Christ the King Celebration

At the end of each “liturgical year”, on the final Sunday in Ordinary time, Catholics celebrate “The Solemnity of Christ The King”, or as it’s known today – “The Feast Of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe”.

This Feast day was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925, in response to the growing “secularism” around the world, a condition that continues to exist and is even more prevalent today.

On Sunday, November 26, our parish will celebrate this Feast day with an adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 10:00am until 10:30am in church.

On behalf of Fr. Socorro, Fr. Henry and the parish Worship Commission, you and your family are invited to participate in this opportunity for a few minutes of quiet prayer and meditation. We encourage you to use the adoration as the start of your family’s preparation for the upcoming, Advent season.

I, along with Fr. Henry and the Staff, would like to take this opportunity to thank each one of you for what you have been to us and to the parish. May we continue to grow stronger and walk closely with the Lord. Let us be thankful every day, and especially this season of the year. When we gather as families on Thanksgiving Day, let us be truly thankful for His many blessings and love God has lavishly poured out on us. I do invite you to come and join us for Mass on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday at 9 am in the Church.

Volunteers Needed

Our parish needs volunteers to light candles on the Advent wreath at the start of all weekend Masses during Advent. We invite you and your family to help at one of the Masses. A “sign-up” poster is located in the main vestibule of the church.

We welcome Rev. Linus Nangwele to our parish today. Rev. Nangwele serves as the U.S. Mission Coordinator for the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom in Ghana, West Africa.

 On behalf of St. Valentine Parish, we would like extend a very special thank you to Shirley, Janet, Patrick, Robert, Daniel and Susan Zimmerman for their donation of four very beautiful gold Ciboria. These four Stacking Ciboria were donated in memory of William (Bill) Zimmerman, their husband and father. We thank the Zimmerman’s for their generosity. God bless you.

 

 

Parish Picnic Next Sunday!  Mass at Noon in Church—Picnic in the School Gym!  Come one, Come all!!!

 Everyone is invited to our Parish Picnic next Sunday, August 28th. We are grateful to our Men’s Club for providing the meat and corn on the cob. We would appreciate if you could bring a dish to share. There will be at least 100 people at the picnic, so please bring enough to feed approximately 15-20 people.

 Those who bring a dish will automatically be entered into a raffle to win a nice prize!

We changed things up a bit for those donating dishes.

· Last names A-G—Desserts or Fruits

· Last names H-O—Appetizers or Dips

· Last names P-Z—Salads—Greens, Pasta, Coleslaw, etc.

 

If you could drop off your dish at the food table prior to the noon Mass that will help our organizers get the food ready in a timely fashion. We will have a 50/50 raffle and games for the kids. We hope to see everyone! Any questions, feel free to see one of our Parish Council members.

Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ

2015corpusChristieaToday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. This solemnity – known in Latin as Corpus Christi — has its origins in the efforts of Saint Juliana of Liege, a medieval nun who had a great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Holy Thursday is certainly a day that celebrates the institution of the Holy Eucharist, but St. Juliana argued that an additional day was needed to promote Eucharistic devotion with those unable to attend Holy Week services. Her bishop agreed, and so did Pope Urban IV, who promulgated Corpus Christi as a feast for the universal Church in the year 1264.

   Over the centuries, this feast has been celebrated in a number of different ways. It became quite popular for parishes to have a Corpus Christi procession after the Sunday liturgy, with the Blessed Sacrament reverently showcased in a monstrance held by the priest as servers and parishioners led the way through neighborhood streets while singing Eucharistic hymns.

   Nowadays, with the renewed interest in Eucharistic Adoration, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is an opportunity for Catholics to reflect on the meaning of the Eucharist in today’s fast-paced world.

 Today on this solemn feast we will be having a procession with the Eucharist after the 12:00 noon Mass. I would like to encourage as many as possible to take part in this celebration. This is a time when we as faithful Catholics can show our love for Christ in the Real Presence by honoring Him in a very public way. It is also a wonderful way in which we can show our love for our neighbors by bringing Our Lord and Savior closer to them. So many conversions are a result of Eucharistic Adoration experienced from inside the Church. How many more there would be if we could reach those who only drive by the church by demonstrating our love for the Eucharist, by devoutly taking part in this procession. Children who have received their First Communion this year have been encouraged to attend in their suits and dresses. It will be even nice to have as many altar servers dress up in their altar servers robes. Please join me in making this solemn procession a very important occasion for our parish.

If you attended the Saturday 5:00 pm Mass or today’s 9:00 am Mass, please feel free to come join us in the procession.

 The St. Valentine community congratulates you on your graduation! We would like to recognize your accomplishments at the noon Mass on June 5, 2016. We are inviting you to attend Mass and join the community afterwards for coffee and doughnuts in the School Meeting Room.
